Caumont sur Durance

A small village not far from Avignon on the river Durance

Location
Aix-en-Provence
Imprint
Updated

Caumont sur Durance lies midway between Avignon and Cavaillon on a small plain near the Durance river.

The original location of the village moved in the thirteenth century to its current location, and was later circled by defensive walls in around 1360, part of which you can still see today.

Later additions to the village included the Porte Neuve which was built in 1775, the Porte du Posterlon and the watch tower which can be found near the main church.

The very first church to have been built in Caumont was the Eglise Saint Symphorien, which you can find near the Jardin Romain, a Roman archaeological site and gardens with a large ornamental pool at its centre.

You can also spot two other small chapels in the village as you wander around the streets.
