Picture quaint little chalets selling goods and produce from local Vaucluse suppliers, surrounded by the smells of vin chaud and the tinkling of sleigh bells.. this Christmas it will be no more.

The mayor of Avignon wants to make the Christmas and New Year festivities more of a spectacle, more suitable for children and to potentially attract bigger crowds to the area.

Local businesses and traders at the market are up in arms, as a large proportion of their annual profits come from the Christmas shoppers flocking to the city.

However if the council are going to spend the money saved on not constructing the little chalets on something bigger and better for visitors to enjoy, surely that can't be a bad thing...? We'll have to wait and see what plans emerge over the next few months.
