Le Barroux

The gateway to Mont Ventoux in the Vaucluse

featured in Towns & villages Updated

Le Barroux stands out from some of its neighbouring hilltop villages thanks to its imposing 12th century castle which dominates the skyline.

The village's elevated position means that you can enjoy fantastic views over the plains below from most places and it also means a bit of physical effort is required to get to the top.

Narrow paved streets work their way around the village, where you'll find the small church of Saint John the Baptist with its bell tower and lots of beautifully restored stone houses and fountains.

At the very top of the village on a rocky outcrop sits the castle, which you can visit between spring and autumn. The castle was originally a fortress and was later built upon and modified over the years, namely in the 16th and 17th centuries.

Later it was damaged in the French revolution and then again in World War II, being restored back to its former glory in the 1960's.

Guide books are available in a multitude of languages should you wish to take the tour.
