Châteaudouble
Tiny village deep in the rugged and hilly Var area
Châteaudouble is a pretty village with a history that dates back to the 12th century. It sits high in the hills above Draguigan in the Var, and is surrounded by beautiful woodland.
Home to a ruined castle (during the Wars of Religion) and you can explore it on foot - there's not much left of it, but there is a very sweet cemetery at the top next to the tower.
The remains of a second tower can be found to the left of the church at the top of the hill. It was demolished after a highwayman took refuge there after plundering the local area.
The village is very tiny so there is not much to do. However, it does sit above two gorges and the views down on to the surrounding green hills are fantastic. The countryside is popular with walkers and climbers with its lush green scenery, cliff faces and prehistoric caves.
